What is Oktoberfest?

Oktoberfest is the world’s largest Volksfest (i.e. a large event in German-speaking countries featuring a combined beer, wine and fun festival). It runs for 16 to 18 days from mid to late September, leading up to the first Sunday of October every year. The festival is held in Munich, Germany, and more than six million national and international travellers attend the event each year.

The first Oktoberfest was held when King Ludwig I married Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen on the 12th of October in 1810. The citizens of Munich were invited to the wedding festivities at the gates of the city which mainly consisted of horse races, choirs and of course, loads of beer and wine! 

Oktoberfest soon became an annual tradition and new fun activities were added to the event including tree climbing competitions, bowling and carnival booths with prizes to be won like silver, porcelain and jewels. Now, huge amounts of Oktoberfest Beer are consumed — in 2014, for example, 7.7 million litres were served — and visitors can eat traditional German foods, go on amusement rides and compete in fun events or games. 

What kind of Oktoberfest supplies do I need?

Celebrating the festival is quite simple — it’s all about sipping delicious beer, toasting with friends, eating traditional German food and dancing through the night! Of course, if this is your very first Oktoberfest, you might be wondering how to throw a memorable Oktoberfest Partei in the first place.

The good news is that we’re here to help — we’ve been to our fair share of Oktoberfest shindigs, so we know how to make the night go off without a hitch! Here are some tips on how to throw an Oktoberfest Partei, complete with Oktoberfest supplies you and your mates can tip your Tyrolean hats to.  

Set the scene with Oktoberfest decorations

Thinking of a traditional Oktoberfest theme, or something more contemporary? Either way, it’s important to keep in mind that Oktoberfest is inspired by Bavaria and the beautiful Bavarian flag in blue and white. We recommend opting for blue and white helium balloons, our foil beer mug balloons and pretzel cutout decorations to start! These are all staples of a smashing Oktoberfest Partei… and don’t forget to serve real pretzels to soak up the Märzenbier.

To maintain the blue and white Bavarian colour scheme, add a “Beer Garden” Bavarian Banner to the entrance of the venue to let attendees know where the fun is for the night.

Organise loads of entertainment like music, games and competitions

At the original Oktoberfest in 1810, choirs of children sang for the royal family… Nowadays, a choir might be a little overkill but a live band certainly won’t be! Consider hiring a talented local band for the night — a brass band would set the scene to a tee, but otherwise, an acoustic band who knows some chilled-out guitar hits would do the trick just as well. 

We also recommend organising some games and competitions for your guests to get involved in. A beer glass race never goes astray — carrying a glass full of beer can be hard enough as it is, but if you have to run to the finish line without spilling a drop then you’re in for a real challenge.

Serve traditional German snacks and drinks

Apart from the Märzenbier, food is the next big event at Oktoberfest. To set the scene for a big German meal, add Bavarian-themed tablecloths and napkins to the table to maintain a consistent Bavarian flag colour scheme throughout the venue, and don’t forget disposable plates, cutlery and cups to save time on cleaning up at the end of the night.

As for the food and drinks, opt for all things German!

• A beer tasting stand — Oktoberfest has become a giant beer-tasting festival over the years, so a beer tasting stand is essential! Before guests pour themselves an entire glass, allow them to taste the different Märzenbier available on the menu. Serve different German beers and other European favourites — it might even be fun to set up a polling system, so you can announce the top Märzenbier of Oktoberfest for the year.
   
• Soft pretzels — This classic German appetiser is sure to tickle the taste buds of your guests, especially if they’re served fresh out of the oven. Sweet or savoury, a soft pretzel always goes down well. Alternatively, if you’re running short on time, opt for some standard pretzels from your local shops or some milk chocolate pretzels from Shindigs for a sweet after-dinner treat.
   
• Sauerkraut — This traditional Oktoberfest dish might be an acquired taste but it’s a worthy addition to any Oktoberfest menu. Made from fermented sliced cabbage, sauerkraut makes an excellent side dish for other traditional German meals… or on top of a hot dog!
   
• German sausages — It wouldn’t be Oktoberfest without traditional German sausage. Alongside a pint of beer, German sausages like bratwurst, knockwurst and frankfurter are to die for. Just add a range of different sauces, so guests can customise their meal!
   
• Strudel — For guests who have an insatiable sweet tooth, we recommend serving apple strudel for dessert. Classic apple strudel is made with spiced apple wrapped in a buttery pastry. Served hot or cold, strudel is incredible topped with powdered sugar, cinnamon sugar and ice cream with vanilla sauce.
