Like so many Christmas traditions, Christmas bon bons first became popular in the 1800s when London sweet maker Tom Smith decided to boost his sales with a Christmas novelty.
He designed his Christmas crackers based on his bon bon sweets, which were sold wrapped in paper. These Christmas crackers, or “Cosaque” as Smith originally called them, had a banger mechanism added and originally contained sweets but soon switched to the small trinkets and gifts we still see in crackers today.

Christmas bon bon jokes are always shockers — even worse than dad jokes — but there’s actually a logical explanation for it. It’s not that Christmas cracker manufacturers all have a terrible sense of humour, it’s actually about bringing people together over how unfunny the jokes are.
If a joke is only funny to half the people in the room it will cause division but if everyone can unanimously agree that it’s a dud, then you’ve got a harmonious Christmas gathering!
