Buttercream icing is the traditional icing choice for flavour and versatility. It is softer and more spreadable than most icings and is perfect for icing cakes, piping borders, writing, flowers, etc. We have found a great You Tube clip from Wilton for a medium consistency buttercream icing recipe. This buttercream icing recipe can also be prepared with all shortening, resulting in a pure white icing. This icing can also be made up to 2 weeks ahead of time and needs to be stored in an airtight container in the fridge.
Because of the butter content in the icing, you will need to be careful during summer, especially if you are piping decorations as the heat can quickly soften the icing.
The ingredients you will need are:
½ c. Butter
½ c. Vegetable Shortening
1 tsp. Clear Vanilla Extract
4 c. sifted Confectioners' Sugar
2-3 tlbs. Milk.
(add cocoa for a chocolate buttercream icing)
