In the early 1800s, European children would put out shoes or socks on Saint Nicholas Day or Christmas Eve in the hope that he would bring them gifts, too. Whether the legend is true, the tradition has stuck and to this very day, every Christmas Eve children all around the world hang stockings in the hope that Saint Nick will bring them something special.
