Father’s Day was created by Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, whose father (a Civil War veteran) raised her and her five siblings after her mother passed away. She had the idea in 1909 while listening to a sermon on Mother’s Day, which was fast becoming a tradition in the United States. The local authorities agreed with Sonora about introducing Father’s Day, so the first Father’s Day was held on June 19th, 1910 — her dad’s birthday.
Here in Australia, Father’s Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of September, although that hasn’t always been the case — Aussie newspapers introduced the idea in the early 1900s, but most Australians didn’t know Father’s Day was a thing for several decades. Men, in particular, were reluctant to celebrate Father’s Day until the 1960s.
A lot of people made fun of Father’s Day in the newspapers!
Giving gifts on Father’s Day was introduced by Ms Janet Hayden, who was also the driving force behind Mother’s Day in Australia. From 1925 onwards, Janet organised the donation, collection and delivery of small gifts to elderly men alone in hospitals or retirement homes — most of these traditional gifts are still given today e.g. beanies and gloves, bed socks, cakes and sweets, scented soaps and at the time, tobacco.
Nowadays, Father’s Day is an opportunity for dads around Australia to put their feet up and be pampered by their kids (and/or grandkids). It’s also an excuse for a good old-fashioned Aussie BBQ and a game of cricket, a trip to the beach, a camping trip, fishing or a big roast dinner.

You can buy Happy Father’s Day balloons any time before Father’s Day, but we recommend buying them closer to the date so they’re fresh and in peak condition before surprising your dad. Aim for at least 10 business days if you’re planning on choosing standard shipping — but make sure to check our shipping policy for a delivery estimate based on your location. This will ensure you receive your balloons in time for the shindig.
You can inflate Father’s Day balloons with either helium or air. Helium will make the balloons float, so if you're going for an impressive, decorative look, this is the right option for you. If you're looking to save money, inflating the balloons with air is just fine — your dad will still be stoked with them.
When Father's Day balloons are inflated with air they can last for weeks at a time but usually look their best for around 3-5 days. However, this will depend on how well they're cared for — if they're kept in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight, they'll last longer. Make sure to check the condition of the balloons before giving them to your dad, just to be safe!
Filling Fathers Day balloons with helium? Float times will vary depending on the type of balloon. Latex usually last 8-10 hours without a Hifloat treatment, with this treatment they can last 2-3 days. Foil Balloons and Supershapes can look their best for 3-5 days before slwly deflating over a week or two.
The price of Father’s Day balloons depends on the design and size you choose. Generally, they range from $5-$30, although this can also vary depending on how you plan to inflate them (don’t forget, we have helium tanks available for hire, or we can curate a bunch of helium balloons for you).
