What is Oktoberfest?

Oktoberfest is the world’s biggest Volksfest (i.e. a large event in German-speaking countries that combines beer and wine festivals with a funfair). Celebrated each year in Munich, Bavaria (Germany), the festival runs for 16 to 18 days from mid-September through to the first Sunday of October (thus the name “Oktoberfest”). 

The first Oktoberfest was in October of 1810 to celebrate the wedding of King Ludwig I and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. The people of Munich were invited to Theresienwiese ("Theresa's Meadow") to join in the festivities — a 3500m horse race, children’s choirs and of course, lots of beer and wine! It didn’t take long for Oktoberfest to become an annual tradition — and it’s easy to see why.

More than six million national and international tourists gather for Oktoberfest for beer and wine tasting as well as a huge range of other fun activities including amusement rides, side stalls and competitions. Plus, Oktoberfest is now celebrated in cities all over the world — including Australia! Considering Aussies are famous for loving beer, it’s no wonder why Oktoberfest is celebrated in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide every year. 

 Fun facts about Oktoberfest

• Albert Einstein once worked at Oktoberfest as an electrician — he helped set up one of the beer tents at the 1896 festival.
   
• Locals traditionally wore Tirolerhüte (Bavarian/Alpine hats) with goat hair attached to signify wealth. The more goat hair you had on your hat, the more money you were thought to have.
   
• During Oktoberfest 2014, 7.7 million litres of beer was served, making it the year where the most beer was consumed at the festival.
   
• You can’t start drinking at Oktoberfest until the Mayor of Munich has said “O’ zapft is” during the opening ceremony. The Mayor of Munich has the honour of tapping the first keg of beer at noon — once this has been done, Oktoberfest can really begin!
   
• There are 14 beer tents on the grounds of Oktoberfest and each tent gets packed out each day, whether it’s big or small.
   
• More than 4,000 items end up in “lost and found” at Oktoberfest each year. Some lost possessions include wheelchairs, crutches and wedding rings, and they find a pair of teeth almost every year!
   
• Don’t like beer but still want to attend Oktoberfest for the experience? Oktoberfest also has the Weinzelt tent where you can find wine and champagne.

Traditional Oktoberfest costumes for men

Lederhosen are short or knee-length leather breeches that were traditionally worn by working-class men in German Alpine regions like Bavaria. The longer versions are called Bundhosen or Kniebundhosen. Lederhosen was originally made from leather because the material was harder wearing and easier to clean after a long day’s work. 

Nowadays, lederhosen are worn for leisure rather than work and you’ll often see them worn at Oktoberfest, Alpine florals and all! Do I have to wear traditional garb to Oktoberfest?

No… but it’s certainly encouraged! A few decades ago, it would have been odd for someone to turn up to Oktoberfest in traditional costume but now, it would be strange if you didn’t! With this in mind, we recommend slipping into some lederhosen, pulling up your socks and polishing off your outfit with an Alpine hat in the spirit of Oktoberfest.

Are the colours on your website accurate?

We do our best to make sure the colours of our costumes and costume accessories are as accurate as possible online. However, due to variances in computer monitors and other screens, we can’t guarantee that the colours will be an exact match. If you’re worried about the colour of the costume you’re thinking of purchasing, feel free to get in touch with our team — we can help find the right colour for you.

Can I hire a costume?

No — all of our costumes and accessories are available for sale only. However, you’ll find that all of our costumes and accessories are very reasonably priced — plus, our costumes can be worn again and again, so go ahead and shop online! There’s never a bad time to start building a costume box for future parties and events.

Can I try on a costume?

Absolutely! At our brick-and-mortar store in Lambton NSW, we have multiple change rooms available where you can try on different costumes and find the right fit for you.

What should I do if I receive my costume and it doesn’t fit?

If you’ve ordered online and your costume doesn’t fit, we can provide a refund so long as it’s within 45 days of the initial purchase. The costume will also need to be in the original packaging (as sold), unworn (except for trying it on for size) and there must be no missing pieces in the pack.

It’s important to note that we cannot provide a refund on certain costume accessories like masks, headwear, fake moustaches, etc. This is for safety and hygiene reasons.

Can I exchange my costume for a bigger/smaller size?

Unfortunately, we are unable to process exchanges in-store or online — we can only provide a refund. However, as soon as you have posted your costume back to us, you can purchase another costume to make sure you have a costume ready in time for Oktoberfest.

I can’t find what I’m after — does that mean it’s out of stock?

Not necessarily. If the costume you want is out of stock online, we recommend contacting our team in Lambton at (02) 4950 9561. Due to the nature of an online store, there’s a good chance that we have your item in stock in-store but we haven’t had a chance to load it onto the website yet (although we always try to be as fast as possible).

Get in touch with our team — we might be able to find a costume in-store, organise a telephone order and ship your costume out to you ASAP.

Can I pick up my order in-store?

Of course! We offer a free click-and-collect service so you can shop online from the comfort of home and pick up the order in-store when you’re ready. We’ll send you a text message when your order is ready to be picked up!

Can someone other than me pick up my order in-store?

Yes! We know you’ve got a busy schedule, so you’re more than welcome to send a friend or loved one to pick up your costume for you. Simply leave a note for us in the checkout and let us know who will be picking up the order for you — we will ask for their ID to confirm we’re giving the right person the right parcel!

How long will it take for my order to arrive?

It depends on what kind of shipping you choose — we offer both standard and express shipping. Areas close to our Lambton store (e.g. Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Hunter Valley, Maitland, Port Stephens) can expect their order within three business days if they choose standard shipping, or within two days with express shipping.

Sydney, Canberra and other metro areas can expect their order within four business days with standard shipping or three with express shipping, and regional areas can expect their order within five business days with standard shipping or three business days with express shipping.

Outside of NSW, standard shipping can take between three and 11 days with standard shipping or two and seven days with express shipping.
