What is Oktoberfest?

Oktoberfest is the world’s largest Volksfest (i.e. a large event in German-speaking countries which combines beer, wine and fun festivals into one giant festival). It is held each year in Munich, Bavaria, Germany and lasts 16 to 18 days from mid/late September to the first Sunday of October (thus the name “Oktoberfest”). 

The first Oktoberfest was held in October 1810 to celebrate the wedding of King Ludwig I and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. The citizens of Munich were invited to the festivities at a field called Theresienwiese (“Theresa's Meadow") where Oktoberfest is still held today. The citizens drank beer and wine, watched a 3,400m horse race, and listened to a choir of children sing for the royal family. 

Oktoberfest was an instant hit and was turned into an annual event. Now, more than six million national and international visitors attend Oktoberfest in Munich each year, and it’s easy to see why it’s such an incredible tourist attraction — as well as beer and wine tasting, there are amusement rides, side stalls and games, all in the spirit of Oktoberfest! 

Oktoberfest has also become a popular event in cities around the world and considering that Aussies are famous for loving beer, it’s no surprise that huge Oktoberfest events are held in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth every year!

How to decorate a venue for Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest is a celebration of all things Bavarian, so it comes as no surprise that Oktoberfest decorations revolve around the blue and white colours of the Bavarian flag. Outdoor decorations 

Before the Oktoberfest fun can begin, it’s important to guide and welcome your guests to the venue — if you’re hosting Oktoberfest outdoors, we recommend our “Beer Garden” Banner in the classic Bavarian flag colours. Hang it between some trees or even along the entrance of a gazebo to let everyone know where the party is — you can complement the banner with our matching Pennant Flag Bavarian Bunting (a whopping 36 metres long). 

Indoor decorations

Your indoor Oktoberfest decorations should reflect the beer tents at Oktoberfest Munich — there are hundreds of tents where visitors can taste different German and European beer, wine and cuisines! What kind of decorations are used at Oktoberfest?

Want to make your Oktoberfest event as close as possible to the real thing? Then we recommend opting for the traditional blue and white colour scheme of the Bavarian flag. These are the colours you’ll find at the Oktoberfest in Munich — of course, you can always change things up a bit with the black, red and yellow colours of the German flag.
Think Bavarian and German flags, banners, streamers, wreaths and even evergreen plants for a true Bavarian atmosphere at Oktoberfest this year.

Do I have to serve beer and wine at my Oktoberfest event?

Of course not! Oktoberfest is a celebration of all things Bavarian and German. You can always serve other beverages like mineral water, fresh fruit juices and non-alcoholic beers (there are lots of worthy options available in Germany). You might even make a bowl of punch, so even the kids can get involved!

Do I have to wear traditional German/Bavarian clothing at Oktoberfest?

No, but it’s certainly encouraged! A few decades ago, it might have been odd to wear traditional garb to Oktoberfest, but now it’s considered odd to wear jeans and a tee-shirt to the event. We recommend slipping into dirndl or lederhosen for a more genuine Oktoberfest experience.

I want blue and white Bavarian balloons at my party — can I get helium balloons from Shindigs?

Yes! We offer helium balloons from our store in Lambton NSW, as well as helium tank hire for special events. It is important to note that there is no option to hire a helium tank through our online store — we will need you to contact us to book a helium tank or DIY helium balloon kit.

Can I hire catering supplies and equipment from Shindigs?

Unfortunately no, we do not offer catering supplies and equipment for hire. Our focus is on DIY parties and functions and helping our customers keep costs down as much as possible. You’ll find our prices quite affordable, and our team would be more than happy to help find the perfect supplies for your Oktoberfest event!

I can’t find what I’m after — does that mean it’s out of stock?

Not necessarily — due to the nature of an online store, we may actually have items in stock at our brick-and-mortar store that have not been loaded onto the website yet. If you have your heart set on a particular item but it appears to be out of stock online, feel free to contact us — if we have it in stock in-store, we can organise a phone order and have it shipped to your location ASAP.
