Oktoberfest is the world’s biggest Volksfest (i.e. a large event in German-speaking countries that combines beer and wine festivals with funfairs). Celebrated in Munich, Bavaria (Germany) every year, Oktoberfest runs for 16 to 18 days from mid-September through to the first Sunday of October (thus the name “Oktoberfest”).
The first-ever Oktoberfest was held in October of 1810 to celebrate the wedding of King Ludwig I and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. The people of Munich were invited to the festivities at Theresienwiese ("Theresa's Meadow") which included a 3500m horse race, a children’s choir and of course, lots of beer and wine!
It didn’t take long for Oktoberfest to become an annual tradition and now, more than six million national and international travellers head to Munich for Oktoberfest each year. Plus, Oktoberfest is now also celebrated around the world — even in Australia! Considering Aussies are famous for loving beer, it’s no surprise that we celebrate Oktoberfest in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.
Our Aussie Oktoberfest events keep getting bigger and better every year!
Looking for a traditional Oktoberfest women’s costume? You can’t go past a dirndl!
A dirndl is a feminine dress that originated in German-speaking areas of the Alps including Bavaria, Austria, Liechtenstein and Switzerland. The outfit features a corset-like bodice with a low neckline, a ruffled blouse under the bodice, a high-waisted tutu-look skirt and an apron with a floral Alpine pattern on the front.
A dirndl is considered a folk costume in Germany. It was developed for Alpine peasants between the 16th and 18th centuries, but now the dirndl is worn for leisure and fashion which is why you’ll find a lot of women wearing a dirndl at Oktoberfest!
Here at Shindigs, we stock dirndl costumes in a huge range of colours including red, yellow, green, brown, black/red, red/blue and blue/white gingham. Just add some long white socks, a pair of heels and either outlandish braids or an Alpine hat to add the finishing touches to your dirndl!
Alternatively, you might opt for the masculine counterpart of the dirndl, lederhosen. Traditionally, lederhosen was worn by working-class men in the Alps. Featuring shorts and an apron/suspenders, the lederhosen was made from leather because it was harder wearing and easier to clean after a hard day’s work.
Nowadays, women can also wear lederhosen — it’s a strong statement of a confident woman — so we stock comfortable, stylish lederhosen for women as well as men. With an Alpine floral pattern and some long white socks, you’ll look cute as a button in lederhosen for Oktoberfest!
Who said you had to wear a traditional Oktoberfest women’s costume?! The festival is fun and outlandish, so why not wear a costume to match the atmosphere? For example, you might opt for our Adult Piggy Back Carry Me Costume — it looks like a moustached Bavarian man is carrying you around on his back while you focus on not spilling your beer.
You could also dress as one of our adult beer bottles — Lükinbetter and Studmeister. These costumes are guaranteed to get a laugh or two at Oktoberfest, and no one can say you aren’t dressed for the occasion… You’ll be a beer at a beer festival, after all!
Yes! While lederhosen was traditionally worn by working-class men, lederhosen can now be worn by women. In fact, a woman in lederhosen is making a strong statement and is seen as quite confident.
Absolutely! We have multiple change rooms available at our brick-and-mortar store in Lambton. You can try on multiple costumes and find the perfect fit ahead of Oktoberfest.

It’s important to note that we cannot provide a refund for certain costume accessories e.g. wigs, certain headwear, etc. This is for safety and hygiene reasons.
